The ascended masters, angels, devas, Deities, saints, sages of each of the world’s religions, living without physical bodies in the inner worlds, guide and govern, help and protect, shower forth blessings and inspiration
The Devas live in the heaven. The Celestial beings occupy the mid-region. Humans, animals, insects, etc., live in the mortal world, and Asuras, the dark forces of the universe, live in the lower worlds. The early Vedic religion recognized only a four-tier universe. As time went by, the number of worlds kept increasing. The number is now uncertain. It can be anything from 14 lower and upper worlds to infinite worlds and universes of both gross and subtle kinds.
Even in the mortal world, there are water-worlds and subterranean worlds where water beings, fabled snakes, etc., live. In addition to them, there are separate worlds for the triple gods (Trimurthis). Besides, the Shaktis (mother goddesses) have their own worlds. Thus, Vedic religion laid foundation to a complex universe of gods, goddesses, humans and other beings, each bound to certain dharma or obligatory duties as part of the universal order (rta). They are all connected by one thread, Brahman, who goes by innumerable names, who is not directly worshipped but who is considered the ultimate recipient of all worship and offerings..
During the Vedic period the divine powers were divided into two classes, the devas and the asuras (in Avestan, daevas and ahuras). In India the devas came to be more powerful than the asuras, and the latter word eventually took on the meaning of demon. In Iran the reverse took place, and the daevas were denounced as demons by Zoroaster, the founder of Zoroastrianism. They still survive as such in the divs of Persian folklore, especially through the epic Shāh-nāmeh (completed 1010; “Book of Kings”) by the Persian poet Ferdowsī, and in the Devil of Christian Europe.
Buddhist cosmology posits the existence of three realms, and the devatas (gods and goddesses) reside in the highest of the six gatis, or destinies, of the lowest realm, the kama-dhatu (“realm of desire”). Within this destiny there are many heavens, each inhabited by many deities. The most important of these heavens are the Tusita Heaven, where the future buddha, Maitreya, awaits the time for his coming to earth; the Heaven of the Thirty-three Gods, which is presided over by Inda (Sanskrit: Indra; sometimes called Sakka [Sanskrit: Shakra]); and the Heaven of the Four Guardian Kings, who are important protective deities in many Buddhist contexts.
Deva in sanskrit is anything divine. It has been used as a term for God.
